I discovered not only circus through Circus WOW, but I discovered community, beautiful friendships and a part of my identity as a woman. I had always been very active, doing gymnastics as a kid, and yoga as a “grown up”; and I’d been a wanderer since the time I left school. It seems I was destined to end up in the circus. In my early thirties, with a toddler in tow, I found Circus Wow.
I begin training in aerials and performed on trapeze, then hoops, before adagio became my love. Today I play in all three, as well as stilt walking at the odd festival. I was asked to become a trainer for aerials and hoops and still fill in here and there when needed. I have performed in various acts and shows including The Silence We Carry, Golden Gaytimes, Bathing Belles, Viva la Gong, Portraits of WOW, and International Women’s Day festivities.
I have been on the committee on and off for five years, and can never quite give as much as I’d like whilst juggling work and a family. I’ve been a part of WOW’s evolving landscape, but the core values which lured me initially remain the same, creating a safe, inclusive and fun environment for me to challenge my body and my mind, and make many meaningful connections with wonderful humans along the way.
I see a long time connection with Circus Wow, pushing my body, creating acts and developing social circus programs in partnerships with community service organisations.
